New Orleans Baby Cakes left-hander Justin Nicolino has been named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for July 3-9.
Nicolino tossed 10 2/3 scoreless innings over a pair of starts, both victories. He allowed three hits without a walk in five innings on the 4th of July against Omaha, and followed with 5 2/3 innings of three-hit ball in Sunday's win over Oklahoma City, when he equaled a season high with six strikeouts.
The 25-year-old has appeared with both New Orleans and Miami in each of the last three years, and is one win shy of breaking into the New Orleans career top 10. He has made nine starts for the 'Cakes this year, compiling a 3-3 record and 3.49 ERA. In 36 career MLB appearances (30 starts), Nicolino has a 4.61 ERA in 173.2 innings.
The left-hander was originally selected by the Blue Jays in the second round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. He was traded to the Marlins in a 12-player deal in November 2012. This is his fourth career Pitcher of the Week. The previous three honors came with the Southern League's Jacksonville Suns, once in 2013 and twice in 2014.
Nicolino is the third Baby Cake to earn weekly honors from the league this season, joining outfielders Isaac Galloway and Destin Hood, who each took home Player of the Week accolades in May.
Colorado Springs first baseman Garrett Cooper was named PCL Player of the Week by hitting .500 with six doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI.
The Baby Cakes open the second half of the season on Thursday in Oklahoma City before returning home on Friday, July 21. Tickets are available at the stadium box office, online via Ticketmaster or cakesbaseball.com, or by calling (504) 734-5155.
