Birmingham Barons Alumni In The 2017 MLB Playoffs

Boston Red Sox: Addison Reed
Relief pitcher Addison Reed spent part of the 2011 season pitching out of the Barons bullpen. He compiled a 0-1 record with a 0.87 ERA in 13 games allowing just two runs over 20.2 innings pitched while striking out 33. He began the 2017 season with the New York Mets going 1-2 with a 2.57 ERA and 19 saves in 48 appearances. On July 31^st the Mets traded Reed to the Boston Red Sox for three minor league pitchers, Jamie Callahan, Stephen Nogosek, and Gerson Bautista. In 28 games with the Red Sox following the trade he went 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA.
The Red Sox also have 2005 Baron Chris Young on their 40-man roster but he is not on the active roster for the Divisional Round. Boston is managed by John Farrell who is the father of 2015-16 Barons infielder Jeremy Farrell.
Chicago Cubs: Jose Quintana
Starting pitcher Jose Quintana made nine starts with the Barons during the 2012 season going 1-3 with a 2.77 ERA prior to his promotion directly to the Chicago White Sox. He was 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA in 18 starts with the White Sox this season. On July 13^th the White Sox traded Quintana to the Chicago Cubs for prospects Eloy Jiménez, Dylan Cease, Matt Rose, and Bryant Flete. Quintana went 7-3 with a 3.74 ERA and one complete game in 14 starts with the Cubs.
Cleveland Indians: Terry Francona and Mike Barnett
Terry Francona was manager of the Birmingham Barons for three seasons from 1993 through 1995 during which he compiled a record of 223-202. He also led the Barons to the 1993 Southern League Championship and managed the Barons during the historic 1994 season where basketball legend Michael Jordan suited up for Birmingham. Francona is a two-time American League Manager of the Year and led the Boston Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. He led the Indians to the World Series last year where they were ultimately defeated by the Chicago Cubs in seven games. The Indians set an American League record this year with a 22-game winning streak which is second all-time to the New York Giants streak of 26.
Mike Barnett served on Terry Francona's staff as hitting coach with the Barons from 1993-1995. He is currently the video coach for the Cleveland Indians.
Houston Astros: None
Los Angeles Dodgers: Brandon McCarthy
Brandon McCarthy made a brief stop in the Barons starting rotation in 2004 going 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA in four starts to finish the season. He began the 2005 season with Triple-A Charlotte before joining the White Sox later that year. McCarthy was 6-4 with a 4.18 ERA in 19 games for the Dodgers this season including 16 starts. He has not been announced as a starting pitcher for the first three games of the Divisional Round but could be included in the Dodger bullpen.
2012-14 Baron Trayce Thompson is also on the Dodgers 40-man roster but struggled through the 2017 campaign spending most of the year with Triple-A Oklahoma City and is likely not a candidate for the playoff roster.
Washington National: Gio Gonzalez
Gio Gonzalez was the ace of the 2007 Barons starting rotation going 9-7 with a 3.18 ERA in 27 starts striking out 185 over 150.0 innings of work. He had a bounce back season with National this year going 15-9 with a 2.96 ERA in 32 starts. He is scheduled to get the ball for Game 2 of the Divisional Series against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.
