KODAK, Tenn. - The Birmingham Barons saw their two-game winning streak snapped as they fell to the Tennessee Smokies 6-0 on Monday night. Starting pitcher Zach Hedges pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball and three relievers combined to shut down the Barons offense over the final 3 1/3 innings.
Barons starter Jordan Guerrero yielded all four of his earned runs in the Smokies half of the second inning. Carlos Penalver put Tennessee on the board with a triple that drove home Jason Vosler. Roberto Caro followed up with an RBI single that plated Penalver extending the Tennessee lead to 2-0. Charcer Burks then made it 3-0 on a double to center field which brought home Caro. Jeffrey Baez wrapped up the Smokies scoring in the inning with an RBI single that scored Burks making it 4-0.
Guerrero would exit the game after pitching five innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out six. Reliever El'Hajj Muhammad took over in the sixth inning and pitched two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the eighth. After issuing walks to Ian Rice and Cael Brockmeyer Muhammad gave up a single to Jason Vosler that was misplayed by outfielder Courtney Hawkins which allowed both runners to score extending the Smokies lead to 6-0 with Volmer advancing to third.
