Knights slug past Bats, 12-4

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Louisville Bats were beaten on Wednesday night by the Charlotte Knights in their second appearance at BB&T Ballpark 12-4.

The Knights blew the game wide open when they put up seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. Charlotte had already come into the inning with a 5-1 lead, but pushed it to a 12-1 lead. Matt Davidson hit a two-run homer during the onslaught, which included giving up seven hits in a row to Knights' batters.

The Bats received a home run in the top of the eighth from Bryan Anderson, his fourth of the season. Ruben Gotay went 2-for-5 in the game and had two RBI, including one in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.

Righty Brett Marshall (0-3, 12.75) made his fifth start for Louisville this season and took his third loss. He pitched two innings, gave up nine hits, eight earned runs, a walk and two strikeouts. He gave up home runs in the first and third innings. The first home run was a two-run shot from Andy Wilkins. He pitched to six batters in the third inning.

Every starter for the Charlotte Knights had a hit and scored a run. The Knights had 14 hits Wednesday night, but still left six runners on base.

With the loss, the Bats drop to 40-40 in 2014 and have now lost three straight games. Louisville has been above the .500 since the halfway mark this season on June 17. They are now 2-4 on the current road trip.

Charlotte right-handed pitcher Deunte Heath (4-1, 2.65) got his fourth win of the season. He pitched six innings, gave up seven hits, two earned runs and struck out seven Louisville batters.

Righties Nick Christiani and Tim Crabbe both made relief appearances in the game. Christiani pitched two innings, gave up two hits and an earned run, two walks and had three strikeouts. Crabbe appeared in the fifth inning and pitched three innings, gave up three hits, no runs and had a strikeout.

Louisville will look for their first win at BB&T Ballpark against Charlotte on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Righty Chien-Ming Wang (7-5, 3.76) will take the mound for the Bats and look to get his eighth win of the season. He will face Charlotte's left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp (3-4, 4.54).
