TOLEDO, OH - The Louisville Bats (12-26) dropped the second game of their midweek series, 5-2, against the Mud Hens (18-18) on Tuesday afternoon at Fifth Third Field.
The Bats started Asher Wojciechowski (1-0, 1.40 ERA), who earned a quality start and was able to limit the Toledo offense to just two runs in six innings.
Wojciechowski gave up six hits, with one walk, five strikeouts, and one home run surrendered. He had retired 11 batters in a row, before giving up the solo home run to Toledo's Omar Infante in the fifth inning.
The Bats collected eight hits on the afternoon, with a single to right coming from Brandon Dixon in the fifth inning, extending his hitting streak to five games.
The Mud Hens took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning, after Wojciechowski relinquished three consecutive base hits with two outs.
Louisville countered in the top of the sixth inning when Chad Wallach blasted a two-out, two-run home run to left, plating Winker, who reached on an error.
The Bats took this 2-2 tie game into the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to settle the Toledo offense, and the Mud Hens scored three unearned runs off of reliever Kyle McMyne.
Facing a 5-2 deficit entering the top of the eighth, the Bats attempted a rally with singles from Renda and Elizalde, but a double play ended the inning. Louisville then brought in reliever Alejandro Chacin to pitch the bottom of the eighth, and he quieted the Mud Hens with three quick outs.
In the top of the ninth, Wallach reached base on a wild pitch and Ervin drew a walk with two outs. However, a fly out from Amaral to end the game squandered the Louisville momentum.
Louisville and Toledo will faceoff again tomorrow evening at 6:35 p.m. for game three of the four game series at Fifth Third Field. Taking the mound for the Bats will be RHP Wendolyn Bautista (0-0, 6.75 ERA), and RHP Warwick Saupold (1-0, 2.97 ERA) will start for the Mud Hens.
