MOBILE, Ala. (August 6, 2017) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced Sunday that right-handed pitcher Jesus Castillo will join the Mobile BayBears from Class A Advanced Inland Empire. He is scheduled to make his first Double-A start Monday at Hank Aaron Stadium against the Montgomery Biscuits.

Castillo, 21, was acquired by the Angels in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on August 1, 2016, in exchange for right-handed pitcher Joe Smith. He finished last year with a full-season affiliate for the first time in his career, making six starts with Class A Burlington. This year, after four starts with the Bees, he was promoted to Inland Empire on April 29. In 16 games, 15 starts, in the California League, Castillo went 8-3 with a 3.62 ERA, with 18 walks and 74 strikeouts in 82 innings pitched.

The San Felix, Venezuela native originally signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 27, 2011 and spent the 2012 season with the Dominican Summer League Diamondbacks. He was traded to Chicago on February 18, 2013, along with right-handed pitcher Erick Leal, for outfielder Tony Campana. Castillo spent parts of four seasons in the Cubs organization, advancing to Class A Short Season Eugene. He was a 2016 Northwest League Mid-Season All-Star, going 2-3 with a 3.27 ERA in seven starts with the Emeralds.

Castillo is the No. 15 prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline, becoming the ninth active BayBears player on the Top 30 list.
