MOBILE, Ala. (August 3, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, recorded their first sweep of the 2017 season with a 6-4 victory over the Mississippi Braves in the series finale Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
After the teams traded runs early, the BayBears (51-58 overall, 21-19 second half) broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Zach Houchins hit an RBI double to plate Matt Thaiss and put Mobile back in front for good. Jose Rojas added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer in the eighth.
Justin Kelly (1-0) earned the win in relief after Alex Blackford departed with the game tied 2-2 in the fourth inning. Kelly tossed three scoreless frames, gave up two hits, and struck out three batters.
Kolby Allard (6-10) took the loss for the Braves (46-64, 12-28). Allard allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Brennon Lund singled and scored in a two-run second inning. He finished 2-for-4 in his Double-A debut. Thaiss and Zach Gibbons also had two-hit games.
This was the first series sweep for the BayBears since April 25-29, 2015 against Mississippi. It was also the first six-game series sweep for Mobile since June 24-29, 2007 against West Tenn.
The BayBears are currently on a season-long six-game win streak and have won seven consecutive games at home.
The BayBears begin a five-game home series against the Montgomery Biscuits Friday at 7:05 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Grayson Long (6-6, 3.00 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against southpaw Genesis Cabrera (4-1, 2.40 ERA) for Montgomery.
