MOBILE, Ala. (March 7, 2017) - Sixteen former members of the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, are representing 10 different countries in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, an international baseball tournament running through March 22.
Former BayBear Paul Goldschmidt, a National League All-Star in each of the past four seasons, is suiting up for the United States. During Mobile's 2011 Southern League Championship season, Goldschmidt was named Minor League Player of the Year, the Southern League's Most Valuable Player, and set a BayBears record with 30 home runs. He hit .302 with 94 RBI in 103 games and was promoted directly to the Arizona Diamondbacks, making his Major League debut on August 1.
Three-time National League All-Star and former BayBear Carlos Gonzalez is representing his home country of Venezuela in the tournament. Gonzalez spent the majority of the 2007 season with Mobile, totaling a .286 average with 16 homers and 75 RBI. He was also selected to participate in the 2007 All-Star Futures Game in San Francisco. Gonzalez was traded from the Diamondbacks to the Athletics following the season, and he made his MLB debut with the Athletics on May 30, 2008.
In addition to Goldschmidt and Gonzalez, former BayBears currently on MLB 40-man rosters appearing in the World Baseball Classic include Tommy Layne (Italy), Oliver Perez (Mexico), Silvino Bracho (Venezuela), and 2013 Southern League Mid-Season All-Star Ender Inciarte (Venezuela).
Chris Oxspring (Australia), George Kottaras (Canada), Cesar Valdez (Dominican Republic), Craig Breslow (Israel), and Luis Cruz (Mexico) also went from Mobile to the big leagues in their respective careers.
