Generals Slide By BayBears 3-1

Season High Six Steals Leads Jackson to Victory
August 4, 2013

MOBILE, AL - The Jackson Generals scored three runs in the top of the 6th to erase a 1-0 deficit, and went on to defeat the Mobile BayBears 3-1 on Sunday evening at Hank Aaron Stadium.

The BayBears opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd on Dustin Martin's sixth home run of the season, but that would be the one mistake that Generals starter Anthony Fernandez (8-5) made all night. The left-hander went six for his eighth victory of the season, though Mobile starter David Holmberg was even better.

Making his 22nd start of the season, Holmberg allowed just four hits and two walks in five scoreless innings. He notched seven strikeouts, his highest total since June 28, but did not factor in the decision as the bullpen failed to hold the lead.

Mark Serrano (4-1) replaced Holmberg in the 6th, and the righty's first relief appearance in more than a month did not go well. He allowed all three Jackson runs on four hits, and suffered his first defeat in nine outings with the BayBears.

Down 3-1 after five and a half, the BayBears bats went quiet for the rest of the night, as they managed just one bunt single the rest of the way. Carson Smith retired the last five BayBears in order for his 12th save of the season, and he did it in style, striking out the side in the 9th

The BayBears lead the five game series two games to one, and game four will get underway at 7:05 on Monday night at The Hank. Bo Schultz (4-2, 2.68) will be on the mound for Mobile opposite Anthony Vazquez (1-1, 3.38) for Jackson.
