Noisy ninth pushes BayBears past Pensacola

Three-run ninth, pitching staff holds Wahoos scoreless after third

PENSACOLA, Fla. (August 11, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, began the ninth inning with four straight hits and scored three runs to defeat the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 3-1 Friday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
After the first two batters of the inning reached with singles against Pensacola closer Zack Weiss (2-2), Matt Thaiss tied the game with an RBI double. Taylor Ward followed with a two-run double to give the BayBears (55-61 overall, 25-22 second half) a 3-1 lead. Mobile only had one runner in scoring position during the first eight innings.
Grayson Long gave up just one unearned run in the third and struck out six batters, but he departed after 4 1/3 innings. Jhondaniel Medina pitched 2 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings, and Greg Mahle (5-0) got the final six outs of the game to earn the win.
Deck McGuire pitched seven scoreless innings for the Blue Wahoos (61-56, 21-26), only allowed three hits, and recorded seven strikeouts. He retired 13 straight batters from the second inning through the sixth. However, he did not factor in the decision.
Pensacola had runners in scoring position in six different innings, but they left 10 men on base and went 0-for-11 with RISP.
Jose Rojas went 0-for-4, snapping his 13-game hitting streak.
The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Pensacola Saturday at 6:35 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell (7-8, 4.35 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Mobile against righty Jesús Reyes (1-2, 2.22 ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
