Schugel, Woodall Impress in DH Split

April 8, 2014

PEARL, MS -- The Mobile BayBears split their double header with the Mississippi Braves Monday night at Trustmark Park. The M-Braves took the first game 4-0 but the BayBears won the back-end of the twin billing, 2-1 and in doing so, won the five game series three games to two.

After dropping the first of the days contest, Mobile rebounded the game one loss with a 2-1 win in the series finally. RHP A.J. Schugel (1-0) stymied the M-Braves bats, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out a team high nine batters in five innings on the mound. The dominate performance was enough to earn Schugel his first win of 2014. Both runs in the second game were batted in by Michael Freeman, who drew a bases loaded walk in the second inning to push across the tying run and then Freeman struck again with a RBI double to right in the fourth inning, giving Mobile the 2-1 lead. RHP Jake Barrett struck out one and pitched a scoreless ninth to record his second save on the year.

Game one was a pitchers dual for the first six innings. Although RHP J.R. Graham held Mobile hitless for five full innings before exiting the game, BayBears RHP Bryan Woodall was equally impressive. Woodall did not factor in the decision, surrendering just two hits while striking out six in five scoreless innings on the mound. The loss was credited to BayBears RHP Bradin Hagens who allowed four runs to cross the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning but none were earned after an error allowed the inning to continue.

The BayBears return home with a scheduled off day on Tuesday and then Mobile begins their home schedule on Wednesday, April 9 at 7:05 PM against the Montgomery Biscuits. Tickets are on sale now by calling 251.479.BEAR or online at MobileBayBears.com
