Baysox Fall Just Short Against Akron
Bowie, Md. - The Baysox fell just inches short of rallying to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 7-6 loss to the Akron RubberDucks on a cold Friday night in Bowie. Sharlon Schoop, the tying run, was thrown out at home plate with two outs to end the game and the Baysox chance for a tie.
Despite a big third inning where the Baysox scored five runs to take the lead, the team could not hang on, surrendering a season-high seven runs in the loss. The Baysox have played four consecutive one run games and lost three of them.
Akron struck first in the top of the second inning against Baysox starter Jake Pettit. Giovanny Urshela hit a lead off single to center field and stole second base before scoring on a double to left field by Bryson Myles. With two outs, Myles moved to third base on a wild pitch and he scored on a Tyler Holt infield single to give the RubberDucks a 2-0 lead.
The Baysox came storming back to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning against Akron starter Kyle Davies. K.D. Kang led off the inning with a single to right field - the Baysox first hit of the game. Sharlon Schoop then drew a walk and both runners moved two bases after Johnny Ruettiger reached on a throwing error on the catcher while attempting a sacrifice bunt. Buck Britton brought home the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly and Niuman Romero followed with a walk to put two runners on base. Christian Walker cleared the bases with his first home run of the season - a three run blast to left field to give the Baysox a 5-2 lead.
The RubberDucks got two runs back in the top of the fourth inning. Myles drew a lead off walk and Jake Lowery was then hit by a pitch. Lowery left the game and was replaced by Jerrud Sabourin. Both runners advanced on a Tony Wolters groundout and scored on a two-out Jordan Smith bloop single over third baseman Buck Britton's head to make the score 5-4.
Dariel Alvarez gave the Baysox a 6-4 lead and extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a solo home run to center field to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning.
Akron came back to retake the lead in the top of the seventh inning against Baysox reliever Ashur Tolliver. Francisco Lindor hit a lead off single to center field and Joe Wendle followed with a walk. Urshela brought Lindor home with a single to left field and reliever Juan Morillo then replaced Tolliver on the mound. Myles reached on bunt single to third base to load the bases and Wendle then scored on a Sabourin sacrifice fly. The final run of the inning scored after a throwing error by catcher Michael Ohlman during a stolen base attempt to give the RubberDucks a 7-6 lead.
Pettit pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking three in the no decision. Tolliver pitched one-third of an inning and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits while striking out one and walking one. Morillo pitched two innings and did not allow an earned run on two hits while striking out four and walking one. Reliever Oliver Drake pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Baysox.
Davies picked up the win for Akron, pitching six innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out two.
RHP Matt Bischoff (1-1, 4.82) takes the mound for the Baysox Saturday as the team plays the final game in a three game series with the Akron RubberDucks. He will be opposed by RHP Gabriel Arias (1-1, 2.00).
The Baysox are home through Thursday, April 24 for an eight-day, seven-game homestand against Akron and Erie. Promotional highlights include the Spring Fling Saturday, April 19 beginning at 2:05 p.m. and Mutt Monday, April 21 beginning at 6:35 p.m.
