Orioles Honor Urrutia, Wright, Kendall

Outfielder Henry Urrutia, pitcher Mike Wright and manager Gary Kendall were honored at Camden Yards Sunday. Urrutia was named the Brooks Robinson Orioles Minor League Player of the Year, Wright was named the Jim Palmer Orioles Minor League Pitcher of the Year and Kendall received the Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award.

Each of these three honorees had a major impact in helping the Baysox to finish 71-71 and at .500 or better for the seventh consecutive season. Urrutia was leading the Eastern League in batting average at the time of his promotion and Wright led the Baysox with 11 wins and a 3.26 ERA. At the helm for his third season, Kendall became just the third Baysox manager to win 200 games with the team.

Playing his first season of professional baseball in the United States after a successful defection from Cuba, Urrutia was outstanding for the Baysox and the Triple-A Norfolk Tides before his quick promotion to Baltimore. Urrutia joined the Baysox in late April and was an instant sensation, homering in his first home at-bat and hitting .365 with seven home runs and 37 RBI in 52 games with the Baysox.

Urrutia was named the Orioles Minor League Player of the Month in May, when he hit .348 with nine doubles and 13 RBI and he also participated in the MLB Futures Game in July. The left-handed hitter made his Major League debut July 20 and has appeared in 23 total games with the Orioles this season.

Wright was drafted by the Orioles in the third round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of East Carolina University. He was the first Orioles player from the 2011 draft class to make his Double-A debut with the Baysox May 25, 2012 and he returned to Bowie better than ever in 2013.

The Laurel Hill, N.C. native started 26 games for the Baysox, going 11-3 with a 3.26 ERA. He finished tied for the Eastern League lead in ERA and winning percentage and led the team in both categories along with strikeouts (136). Wright was selected for the Eastern League All-Star game in July where he started and earned the win after pitching a 1-2-3 inning. He made his Triple-A debut during his last start of the season and he pitched six and two-thirds scoreless innings for the Tides.

The Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award is presented to a minor league staff member who exemplifies the qualities of the late Oriole who is regarded as the architect of "The Oriole Way." Kendall has been a part of the Orioles organization for the past 14 years, spending the last three as manager of the Baysox where he has helped to develop current Orioles and top prospects like Manny Machado, Kevin Gausman, Jonathan Schoop, Urrutia, Wright and Eduardo Rodriguez. Kendall has been selected to manage in the Arizona Fall League this year.
