BILOXI, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers announced today that Biloxi native Barry Lyons, former Major League Baseball Player for the Dodgers, Angels, White Sox and member of the 1986 World Champion New York Mets is joining the organization as a team ambassador. Lyons will make appearances on behalf of the organization and serve as a team representative in the community and throughout baseball.
"We are looking forward to having Barry serve as an ambassador for the Shuckers," said Biloxi Shuckers General Manager Chuck Arnold. "His passion for his hometown and the game of baseball make him a perfect fit to help expand our community initiatives and further promote the Shuckers throughout the Mississippi Gulf Coast."
Lyons was born and raised in Biloxi, MS - a 1978 graduate of Biloxi High School and a 1984 graduate of Delta State University. Lyons was drafted by the Mets in 1982 and enjoyed a fourteen-year professional baseball career as a catcher and first baseman. He played a total of seven seasons in Major League Baseball.
"I am very excited to be joining the Biloxi Shuckers team and looking forward to contributing to the overall success of the organization," said Lyons. "I am also excited about getting out in the community and promoting the Shuckers."
After retiring in 1996, Lyons was a manager for three years in Minor League Baseball, two of which were with the Charleston Alley Cats, a Cincinnati Reds Class-A affiliate in Charleston, WV. He later served as a television and radio broadcaster for three years with the Nashville Sounds, Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates in Nashville, TN.
Lyons moved back to Biloxi in 2002 and began an effort to bring Minor League Baseball to his beloved hometown of Biloxi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Lyons will also assist the club in the organizing of Shuckers' Youth Baseball Camps this summer. Over the past thirty years, he has organized, coached, and directed numerous instructional clinics, camps, teams, and leagues as well as taught individual private hitting and catching lessons.
The Shuckers are committed to the continuing effort of building up the community and Mississippi Gulf Coast as a whole. The Shuckers and its concessionaire, Spectra Food Services & Hospitality raised over $178,000 for local nonprofits in 2016 and donated over $30,000 of in-kind contributions. Through Shuckers initiatives including the Ticket Fundraising Program, In-Stadium Auctions and Spectra NFP Fundraising Program which benefits qualified local 501 (c) (3) nonprofit groups through concessions, the club led the ten-member Southern League for In-Stadium Fundraising.
If you are interested in having Barry Lyons, or any other member of the Shuckers front office speak to your group, please contact Community Relations and Promotions Coordinator Jenifer Truong at email@example.com or 228-271-3469.
