Remember Me? Gage Guides Ponies Past Old Team

Southpaw throws six scoreless in former home ballpark
August 7, 2018

RICHMOND, VA - Former Flying Squirrel Matt Gage tossed six scoreless innings in his Rumble Ponies debut to lead Binghamton past Richmond, 5-1, on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Joey Terdoslavich led Binghamton's offensive attack with three RBI, including a two-run homer, and helped Binghamton improve to 5-1 in their last six games.

Gage had started the season on Richmond's Opening Day roster before eventually being released by the Giants on July 13. After making one start in independent ball with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League, Gage signed with the Mets as a free agent.

Toeing a familiar rubber at The Diamond, Gage stepped around a leadoff single to post a scoreless first inning. In the second, the left-hander stranded a pair of Squirrels on the bases before leaving two more on in the third. Following a perfect fourth, Gage tossed a blank fifth thanks to a slick double play started shortstop Andres Gimenez. The newcomer capped his night by getting past a two-out single in a scoreless sixth.

Gage owned a lead before he even threw a pitch as a Rumble Pony. Levi Michael opened the game by stroking Mike Connolly's first pitch of the night into the left-field corner for a double. Two pitches later, Andres Gimenez flied an RBI double to the wall in right. Terdoslavich added to the lead with an RBI single later in the inning.

In the fourth, a fielding error by third baseman CJ Hinojosa allowed the Rumble Ponies to stretch their lead by another run. Terdoslavich ripped a two-run homer inside the left-field foul pole against reliever Garrett Williams in the seventh.

Matt Blackham tossed two scoreless innings of relief before Ryder Ryan was touched for an unearned run in the ninth.

Gage (1-2) stranded a half-dozen runners and held the Squirrels hitless in three at-bats with runners in scoring position to claim his first Eastern League victory of the season.

The Rumble Ponies (54-60) continue their only visit of the season to Richmond on Wednesday at 6:35 PM. RHP Harol Gonzalez takes the mound against RHP Connor Menez. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pregame show starts at 6:20 PM and can be heard on NewsRadio 1290 AM WNBF and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn.
