Biscuits Beat Smokies, Remain in First

September 2, 2016

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits won for the 11th time in 13 games on Friday night, defeating the Tennessee Smokies, 10-5, at Riverwalk Stadium

Hunter Wood (6-2) toed the rubber for the Biscuits in his ninth start for the club, and while the right-hander got into trouble early serving up two solo home runs in the second inning to Ian Happ and Ben Carhart, the 23-year-old would settle down and wound up going seven innings of three-run ball for a quality start and his sixth victory of the season.

After going down 2-0 in the second, the Biscuits would rally with four-straight two-out singles in the bottom of the second off Jen-Ho Tseng (6-8), with RBIs from Braxton Lee and Tommy Coyle to tie the game. An inning later, Jake Bauers stepped up and pounded an opposite-field two-run home run to give the Biscuits a 4-2 lead and added two more RBI-singles later in the game for the first baseman's third four-RBI performance of the season, the most on the team.

The Biscuits would score nine unanswered runs before Tennessee fought back with a run in the seventh and a two-run eighth, but it was not enough on this night as the Biscuits went on to the five-run victory. Montgomery will head into Saturday needing one win in their final three games to be guaranteed a playoff spot with Taylor Guerrieri (12-6) on the mound against Tyler Skulina (4-12) at 6:35 PM.
