DePew Hits (and Pitches) Biscuits to 6-2 Win

September 5, 2016

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits ended the 2016 regular season on a high note, beating the Tennessee Smokies in the 140th and final game of the year by a score of 6-2.

The Biscuits sent Jared Mortensen (7-7) to the mound and the knuckleballer impressed, hurling five shutout innings in his first win as a starter this season. Jonathan Martinez (1-1) pitched on the other side for the Smokies, and was terrific until the fifth when the Biscuits finally broke a scoreless tie.

After Patrick Leonard grounded out to third, Montgomery strung together four-straight hits, including a two-run double by Jake DePew, and an RBI-double by Tommy Coyle to make it 3-0 Biscuits. In the seventh, DePew was at it again, launching his career-high ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to increase the lead to four. Jake Bauers' RBI-double in the eighth made it 5-0, and a Braxton Lee RBI-single made it 6-0 in the same inning.

Tennessee would tack on a couple of runs in the ninth off Mark Sappington, and after Jeff Ames was hit on the wrist by a comebacker and removed from the game, DePew would come in to pitch for the first time this year to record the final two outs of the regular season on back-to-back groundouts to the second baseman Coyle.

The Biscuits will travel on their off day Tuesday to Jackson to open up Game 1 of the 2016 North Division Series against the Generals in west Tennessee beginning at 6:05 PM.
