DePew Walks Off Biscuits in Game 3 Win

September 9, 2016

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Down two games to nothing and their backs against the wall, the Biscuits rose from the ashes and won Game 3 of the 2016 North Division Series on a dramatic walk-off RBI-double by Jake DePew in the bottom of ninth, 4-3, over the Jackson Generals on Friday night to force a Game 4 on Saturday at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Biscuits sent Chris Kirsch to the mound, and like Brent Honeywell and Chih-Wei Hu before him, the left-hander delivered a stellar performance tossing 7.1 innings of three-run ball to go along with nine strikeouts. Montgomery provided their southpaw with an early lead thanks to a Granden Goetzman RBI-double in the second off Jackson starter Paul Blackburn.

Up 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Biscuits struck again on a two-run laser beam of a home run by first baseman Jake Bauers to give Montgomery a 3-0 advantage. Jackson first baseman Ryan Casteel would knock in a run on a single to make it 3-1 in the fourth, and after Dario Pizzano made it a one-run game with a sac fly in the sixth, Casteel powered an opposite field home run to tie the game at three in the subsequent at-bat.

The game would remain tied entering the bottom of the ninth after Kyle Winkler pitched 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Montgomery. Justin Williams would strike out to begin the bottom of the ninth, but then Goetzman delivered his second double of the game to put the winning run at second base. Next up was Depew, and the Biscuits catcher rocked an Aaron Brooks (0-1) pitch off the right field wall to plate Goetzman and hand the Biscuits their 11th walk-off win of the season.

The victory snaps a nine-game losing skid against the Generals, and was just the fifth Biscuits win over Jackson this season, their first in 11 tries at Riverwalk. The Generals still lead the series, 2-1, but the Biscuits will hope to force a decisive Game 5 in Game 4 Saturday night at 6:35 PM at Riverwalk when Hunter Wood clashes with Bryan Evans.
