Broadcasting Legend Mazer dies at 92
The Buffalo Bisons organization was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former 'Voice of the Bisons' and Buffalo Baseball Hall of Famer BILL MAZER. Mazer passed away in a hospital in Connecticut last night at the age of 92.
The Ukrainian-born Mazer came to Buffalo in 1946 and after two years took over as the 'Voice of the Bisons.' Mazer dominated the airwaves in Buffalo, also broadcasting the hockey Buffalo Bisons, the All-American Football Conference Buffalo Bills and Little 3 Basketball. He also anchored TV sportscasts on WGR-TV when the station first signed on in 1954.
Mazer was inducted to the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000 and is also a member of the Buffalo Broadcaster Hall of Fame.
Mazer's broadcasting career spanned 60 years until his retirement in 2009. Upon leaving the Western New York area in 1964, he joined WNBC-AM in New York City where he was known nationally as 'The Amazing Bill Mazer" after pioneering the sports talk format that is the standard today. He also worked at WOR-AM, on CBS television's NHL and NFL coverage, on ABC and NBC TV game broadcasts and in radio at WFAN, WEVD and WVOX-AM.
