Herd shutdown in Rochester, 1-0
For the first time all season, someone finally had an answer for the Bisons' high-powered offense.
Rochester's Kyle Gibson combined with two relievers to shutout the Herd, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in their series opener at Frontier Field. Buffalo had just two singles in being held off the scoreboard for the first time in 2013.
Buffalo entered play with a .319 batting average -the top team average in all of affiliated baseball. But singles from Anthony Gose and Ryan Langerhans were all the team could muster against Gibson. The Bisons failed to advance a runner into scoring position all game and struck out 11 times.
Gibson had seven of those punchouts over 6.2 innings for his first victory of the season. Caleb Thielbar and Tim Wood retired the final seven Bisons of the game in the win.
Buffalo got great pitching themselves. Buddy Carlyle tossed four shutout innings in a spot start for the recently-promoted Justin Germano. Carlyle fanned seven and allowed just two hits.
Clint Everts allowed the game's lone run to be the hard-luck loser. In the first of his three innings of work in relief of Carlyle, the righty allowed a lead-off double from Evan Bigley and a sacrifice fly from Eric Farris.
BISONS NOTES:Along with only two hits and two walks, the Bisons also hit into a pair of doubleplays. Rochester pitching faced just two more than the minimum…Justin Germano was promoted to Toronto Saturday morning as the Blue Jays designated Aaron Laffey for assignment…With the loss, the Bisons failed in their attempt for a modern era record-tying ninth straight road win.
