Offense clicks once again as Bisons win, 8-4

After being victim to a Syracuse comeback on Monday, the Bisons returned the favor on Tuesday.

 

The Bisons trailed 4-1 through four innings, but the Bisons erupted in the later innings to crawl back and upend the Chiefs, 8-4, at NBT Bank Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

 

The Bisons started to chip away at the Chiefs' lead in the fourth inning, when Dan Johnson hit a solo homer. The Bisons added two runs in fifth inning, as Kenny Wilson hit a two-run triple to bring the Herd within 4-3. In the sixth inning, the Bisons would take the lead for good with another two-run inning. Jared Goedert led off with a solo homer and Munenori Kawasaki's RBI triple gave the Bisons a 5-4 lead.

 

The Bisons' offense wasn't finished. Catcher Mike Nickeas launched a two-run homer to left field and Darin Mastroianni followed with an RBI double to give the Bisons some insurance runs and a 8-4 lead in the eighth inning.

 

The Bisons pounded out 12 hits and have had 12 hits or more in three-straight games. The Herd had eight players in the hit column on Tuesday. Pacing the Bisons was Johnson, who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Johnson was one of four Bisons to have a multi-hit game, joining Kawasaki, Kenny Wilson, and Brad Glenn.

 

The Chiefs put up a three-spot in the first inning, pinning Bisons starter Deck McGuire for a home run and a two-run double. McGuire would settle down from there, allowing just a solo homer the next four innings. McGuire allowed four runs on six hits in five innings of work.

 

The Bisons' bullpen was charged with the loss on Monday and they responded with four scoreless innings on Tuesday. Right-hander Esmil Rogers came on in relief of McGuire and worked two scoreless in the sixth and seventh. John Stilson pitched a scoreless eighth and Bobby Korecky tossed a scoreless frame in the ninth.The bullpen allowed just five Syracuse baserunners.

 

The Bisons have an off day on Wednesday, before traveling to Toledo on Thursday for the start of a four-game set. The Blue Jays announced that Colby Rasmus will make start a rehab stint with the Herd on Thursday. Rasmus has been on the disabled list since May 12.

 

 

BISONS NOTES:

 

Brad Glenn has now hit in 16 of 17 starts with the Bisons after a double in the second inning. Since being promoted to the Herd, Glenn is hitting .403. With his solo homer in the fourth, Johnson is now tied with Mike Hessman for the International League home run lead with 14. Johnson leads the IL in walks (49), and is second in RBIs (44). Goedert is on a 6-game hitting streak and is batting .500 (12-24) over that stretch. Korecky lowered his ERA to 0.26 with a scoreless ninth inning. Korecky leads the IL in ERA among relief pitchers who have thrown 25 or more innings.
