GRANVILLE, WV - The West Virginia Black Bears defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones 8-3 in the rubber match of their three-game series.
The Black Bears trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Deon Stafford Jr. singled and Cyclones' shortstop Franklin Correa made a throwing error, allowing all three Black Bear base runners to cross home. Julio De La Cruz extended the Black Bears lead 4-1 with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Bligh Madris in the bottom of the fourth inning.
West Virginia had a big four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth inning that was started by an RBI double by Deon Stafford Jr. Bligh Madris and Robbie Glendinning followed that up with an RBI single each. Julio De La Cruz reached on an error and Madris scored the Black Bears eighth and final run of the evening.
The Cyclones scored a run in both the eighth and ninth innings but never gained enough momentum to narrow the deficit. Black Bears starter Scooter Hightower tossed seven innings and picked up the win in Thursday night's victory.
The Black Bears (30-20) will travel to Aberdeen to take on the Ironbirds (28-22) in a three-game series. The Ironbirds series will be the Black Bears final three games before the All-Star Break on August 14 and 15.
