Rocks Fall to Myrtle Beach In 8-6 Slugfest
Surprise, AZ - Despite the Wilmington Blue Rocks offense lighting up to the scoreboard to the tune of 6 runs, the pitching staff struggled to contain Myrtle Beach in an 8-6 loss Sunday. The Rocks' record now sits at 3-4-1 on the spring.
Offensively, Wilmington received contributions from several familiar faces. Elier Hernandez put together a 2-3 performance, scored a run, and drove in a run, while Humberto Arteaga also went 2-3 at the plate with a run scored. Former Georgia Tech star Zane Evans finished the day 1-4, but doubled, scored a run, and drove in a pair. To round out the offensive standouts, Kenny Diekroeger had a pair of hits and an RBI.
On the mound for the Blue Rocks, only Clayton Schulz had a noteworthy performance. He threw a scoreless inning and allowed just one hit.
At the Major League level, Mike Moustakas continued his torrid spring with a 2-3 day, a run scored, and an RBI in Kansas City's 13-9 loss to San Francisco. Catcher Salvador Perez yanked a homer during his 1-3 afternoon while Jarrod Dyson picked up a base hit and a run in his only at-bat. On the mound, Yordano Ventura delivered another dazzling performance for the Royals, pitching 5 solid innings and allowing just one run on 5 hits.
At Triple-A Omaha, Cheslor Cuthbert had an excellent day, finishing 2-3 with 2 RBI in the Storm Chasers 2-2 tie with Round Rock. Scott Alexander tossed two scoreless frames and struck out two for Omaha. Double-A Northwest Arkansas lost 2-0 to Frisco, but received solid performances at the plate from Jack Lopez and on the mound from Sam Selman and Angel Baez. Lopez went 1-2 at the plate and stole a base, while Selman pitched a pair of scoreless innings. However, Selman struggled with his command and allowed 2 walks and 3 hits. Baez walked one and allowed a hit, but was not scored on in one inning of work.
Also of note, Wilmington did not play Friday, but the Rocks tied Myrtle Beach 5-5 on Saturday.
