Royals Name 2013 Blue Rocks Player And Pitcher Of The Year

Selman And Adams Honored For Their Work On The Riverfront
September 16, 2013

Wilmington, DE- The Kansas City Royals announced on Thursday that Lane Adams was named the 2013 Wilmington Blue Rocks Player of the Year, while Sam Selman was named Blue Rocks Pitcher of the Year. The organization will name an overall Minor League system Pitcher and Player of the Year during the offseason.

Selman led the Blue Rocks in wins (11), innings pitched (125.1) and strikeouts (128). The Vanderbilt product also paced all Carolina League starters in batting average against and was second in the eight-team loop in games started on the mound. He also turned in the performance of the year when he held the Potomac Nationals without a hit or a run through eight innings in the Blue Rocks' 11-frame victory on August 24.

Adams only spent a little more than half the season with Wilmington, but made his presence felt over that stretch. He was widely acknowledged as the best defensive outfielder in the Carolina League this season, while he more than held his own at the plate. Adams batted .276 with seven homers, 39 RBIs and 23 doubles in 87 games at Advanced-A. He moved to Double-A Northwest Arkansas in July and enjoyed a three-homer game in August. His performance with the Naturals earned him a late-season promotion to Triple-A Omaha.

Three former Blue Rocks were also honored Thursday by the Royals. Aaron Brooks, who began the 2013 campaign in Wilmington, was named the Double-A Pitcher of the Year, while Chris Dwyer took home the same award for Triple-A and shortstop Christian Colon was named Omaha's Player of the Year.

All of the players honored are expected to be at Kauffman Stadium for Futures Night on Friday, September 20, where they will take part in an autograph session with the fans as well as be honored in an on-field presentation prior to the Royals game against the Texas Rangers.

The Blue Rocks drew over 290,000 fans to Frawley Stadium in 2013, helping the Carolina League establish a new overall attendance record. In 2014, Wilmington will welcome the California/Carolina League All-Star Game to the First State. The festivities begin on Monday, June 16 with a special hitting challenge and will continue on Tuesday, June 17 with the All-Star Game itself.
