LAKEWOOD, NJ - Brett Barbier homered and drove in two and the BlueClaws followed up a 21-hit game with a12-hit game in topping Delmarva 8-3 on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park.
The win, coupled with Kannapolis sweeping a double-header from Hagerstown, pulls the BlueClaws within one game of first place Kannapolis with three games left in the first half. The win also marked the fourth series sweep of the season by the BlueClaws (one of Kannapolis, Charleston, Greensboro, and Delmarva).
Lakewood, who had 14 runs on 21 hits on Wednesday, added eight more on 12 hits in this game.
The BlueClaws opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single from Darick Hall and RBI double from Edgar Cabral off Delmarva starter Matthias Dietz. Hall, who drove in four on Thursday, now has 42 RBIs in his last 42 games.
Brett Barbier homered in the fourth inning for his third of the year and second in as many days. Carlos Duran, who drove in five runs on Thursday, had an RBI single later in the inning to put the BlueClaws up 4-0.
Delmarva got two in the sixth to make it 4-2, but Luke Williams added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-2 lead. Lakewood scored three more times in the seventh, accumulating five hits. Three of those hits were RBI singles hit by Mickey Moniak, Brett Barbier, and Edgar Cabral.
Lakewood starter Nick Fanti gave up two runs, one earned, over 5.2 innings to earn the win and improve to 5-0 on the season. Fanti's next appearance comes Tuesday in Columbia when he is the starting pitcher for the Nothern Division All-Stars in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game.
Delmarva starter Matthias Dietz (0-6) gave up four runs, two earned, in five innings and took the loss.
Mickey Moniak, Brett Barbier, and Edgar Cabral all had two hits for the BlueClaws while Barbier and Cabral drove in two runs apiece.
The BlueClaws open a three-game series with Hickory on Friday night at FirstEnergy Park. LHP JoJo Romero (4-1) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Walter Weickel (0-0).
