GREENSBORO, NC - Nick Fanti threw seven scoreless innings to lead the BlueClaws to their league-leading 14th shutout of the season in a 4-0 Sunday win at Greensboro.
Fanti (6-2) won his first game of the second half and gave up just three hits while striking out eight, one off his season high. The left-hander did not walk a batter in earning his sixth win of the season. Jake Kelzer, added to the roster earlier this week, got the last six outs for the BlueClaws.
Lakewood threw their 14th shutout of the season in the win. They lead the league in shutouts and have just one less than they did all of last year. The franchise record is 19 set in 2006.
The BlueClaws got on the board with two runs in the first inning, taking the lead on a two-out RBI single from Henri Lartigue before David Martinelli added an RBI single of his own for a 2-0 lead.
Mickey Moniak hit a two-run home run in the third for a 4-0 BlueClaws lead. For Moniak, it was his fourth home run of the season and second of the second half.
Greensboro starter Michael King (7-5) came out after allowing four runs on six hits over six innings of work.
Moniak had two hits in the win for the BlueClaws, who are now 4-2 on their seven-game trip.
The BlueClaws improved to 8-10/48-40, 8-6 after their 0-4 start to the second half. Greensboro falls to 7-9/44-40 with Lakewood having won 11 of 17 meetings between the two teams this year.
The series and road trip wrap up on Monday at noon. LHP Bailey Falter (4-5) starts for Lakewood opposite Greensboro RHP Dustin Beggs (6-5).
