Mitch Williams, Doc Gooden in Celebrity Hitting Challenge

Event takes place as part of All-Star Game festivities in Lakewood; many more to come
October 25, 2012
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Former Phillie Mitch Williams and former Met and Yankee "Doc" Gooden are the first two participants announced for the "Celebrity Hitting Challenge," to be hosted by the BlueClaws as part of 2013 South Atlantic League All-Star Game festivities in June.

The "Celebrity Hitting Challenge" is on June 17th, the night before the 2013 South Atlantic League All-Star Game at FirstEnergy Park. This will be the first time in league history that the All-Star Game festivities will be a two-day event.

The two-day All-Star festivities are presented by Kimball and Community Medical Centers, OceanFirst Bank, and Shore Point Distributing Company.

"We're excited to stretch the All-Star festivities into two-great nights at the ballpark for our fans," said BlueClaws General Manager Geoff Brown. "Mitch Williams and Dwight Gooden are a great pair of participants to start with and we have many more to come."

Williams played three years (1991-1993) with the Phillies, saving 102 games, including a career-high 43 in 1993, helping the Phillies win the National League pennant. All told, Williams, known as "Wild Thing," saved 192 games in 11 Major League seasons. An All-Star in 1989, Williams is now an analyst with MLB Network.

Gooden won 194 games over 16 Major League seasons, including pitching for both the Mets and the Yankees. Gooden won the 1984 National League Rookie of the Year Award with the Mets and in 1985, won the pitching Triple Crown, leading the National League in wins (24), ERA (1.53), and strikeouts (268). He helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series championship and represented the team in the All-Star game four times. Gooden pitched for the Yankees in 1996, 1997 and 2000 and threw a no-hitter at Yankee Stadium in 1996.

As part of this event, there will be two teams of celebrities who square off in the "Celebrity Hitting Challenge." Targets will be placed around the field, and hitting these targets or other obstacles will earn points for each team. Additional details will be announced, as well as many other participants, in the coming months.
