LAKEWOOD, NJ - Jojo Romero threw eight scoreless innings, striking out eight, to lead the BlueClaws to a 3-0 win over Greenville on Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Park. The win gives the BlueClaws nine wins in their last 10 games.
Lakewood (20-13) had their eight game win streak snapped Monday in Columbia but won their 20th game of the season behind Romero, their Opening Night starter. The left-hander's eight innings marked the longest start of his career and he did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.
The BlueClaws got on the board in the third inning. A bunt single from Raul Rivas, in his Lakewood debut, scored the first run after a throwing error on pitcher Robby Sexton. Then three batters later, Darick Hall singled threw an over-shift to score two more and give the BlueClaws a 3-0 lead.
Trevor Bettencourt earned his team leading third save with a scoreless ninth inning, completing the sixth BlueClaws shutout of the season. The BlueClaws are now tied for the league lead with their six shutouts.
Greenville starter Robby Sexton (0-3) took the loss, allowing three runs over five innings before Daniel Gonzalez threw three scoreless in relief for the Drive.
Darick Hall had two hits and has now driven in 12 runs in 12 games since returning to the active roster.
The series with the Drive continues on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. LHP Ranger Suárez (2-0) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Shaun Anderson (3-0).
