BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie Baysox used 12 singles to chip away and emerge with a 4-2 victory over the Reading Fightin' Phils in front of 1,762 at Prince George's Stadium Monday night.
Henri Lartigue took the first pitch of the third inning deep to left field to give the visitors the first lead and tacked on another run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Baysox (28-10) answered in the bottom of the fourth, however, with a run to halve the deficit. Three singles opened the Bowie rally, capped by a Jesmuel Valentín single to right field.
The score remained the same until the eighth inning, when the hosts broke through with three runs in the eighth inning. After stranding eight batters in the first seven innings, Rylan Bannon came through with a clutch two-run single.
The liner off Reading pitcher Jonathan Hennigan dribbled into shallow center field, allowing Yusniel Díaz and Valentin to score and give Bowie their first lead of the night. After a pair of singles loaded the bases, Mason McCoy grounded a single past the drawn-in infield to left field, plating Bannon for a key insurance run.
The Bowie pitching staff kept the club in the ball game throughout the night. Dean Kremer held a potent Reading offense to two runs on three hits, striking out three batters in five innings to close out his strong July.
Brian Gonzalez made his first Double-A appearance since May 26 at Erie and shined in a no-decision. The lefty struck out a pair of batters, allowing three hits in 2 2/3 innings. Cristian Alvarado earned his third win of the season by striking out two batters during the final 1 1/3 innings.
Bowie and Reading continue their three-game series between division contenders Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Zac Lowther (11-5, 2.57) looks to extend his Eastern League lead in wins against a Reading pitcher to be determined.
