BOWIE, Md. - Bowie Baysox LHP Keegan Akin has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 13th-19th Monday afternoon.
The 6'0", 225 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Baysox last week and had a record of 2-0 with 13 strikeouts and a 1.46 ERA. Akin, who is a native of Alma, Michigan, made his first start of the week on Tuesday in the opening game of a doubleheader against the visiting Richmond
Flying Squirrels and earned the win in Bowie's 10-2 victory. He gave up two runs on four hits while striking out seven batters and walking two over 5.2 innings of work.
Akin made his second start of the week on Sunday at Erie and fired 6.2 shutout innings in Bowie's 3-1 win. He scattered four hits while striking out six batters to improve his record to 14-6 on the season and lower his league-best ERA to 2.77. The 23-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in inning pitched (12.1) last week and tied for the league lead in wins (2). He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in strikeouts (13-3rd).
The No. 12 prospect in the Baltimore organization, according to MLB.com, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2016 draft out of Western Michigan University.
