BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods came back from down 3-0 to push the game to extras, but the Cubs ended up getting the best of Bowling Green in a 4-3 decision after 10 innings of baseball.
The Cubs scored first in a run in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a solo home run from LF Jose Gutierrez . That was the first hit that Hot Rods RHP JD Busfield allowed in the Midwest League this season.
In the fifth inning the Cubs added on a couple more runs in an inning that started with a walk to 3B Christian Donahue and then C Cam Balego doubled to put runners at second and third. A double from LF Chris Singleton put the Cubs up 2-0, and then a sac fly from Gutierrez game them a three run lead.
The Hot Rods responded in the bottom of the seventh when 2B Trey Hair and DH Devin Davis each hit singled to start things off. RF Emilio Gustave scored them both with a triple and made the score 3-2. A single from SS Taylor Walls tied the game up at three.
Neither team scored another run until the 10th inning. Both LHP Andrew Gist and RHP Tyler Day did not allow an earned run, and the only run that Day allowed was an unearned run in the tenth.
In the top of the tenth Donahue laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring 2B Clayton Daniel to third, and then Daniel scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-3. The Hot Rods got a walk in the bottom of the tenth, but couldn't score a run.
The Hot Rods and the Cubs wrap up this series tomorrow at 12:05pm CST from Bowling Green Ballpark. RHP Alex Valverde (5-6, 4.66) gets the start for the Hot Rods, and he will be opposed by RHP Erling Moreno (0-3, 4.76) for the Cubs.
