Hot Rods Unable to Come Back in 5-4 Loss

BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods fell 5-4 to the South Bend Cubs this afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark, losing the rubber match in the three-game series. SS Taylor Walls had three hits and two RBI, but it was not enough to overcome a 5-0 deficit.
The Cubs got a leadoff home run to take a 1-0 lead after a half inning, and scored three more in the third to up the lead to 4-0. They scored what turned out to be the winning run in the sixth on a sac fly, making it 5-0.
Things changed for Bowling Green in the eighth after South Bend went to their bullpen. The Hot Rods send nine batters to the plate in the eighth, and scored three runs, highlighted by RBI hits from Walls, as well as DH Ronaldo Hernandez and LF Moises Gomez , making it 5-3 heading to the ninth inning.
Newcomer 3B Justin Bridgman hit a leadoff single and, after stealing second, scored on a Walls double to right field. It got the Hot Rods to within one at 5-4 and put the tying run on second base. Unfortunately for Bowling Green, they were unable to move Walls off of second, and lost 5-4.
RHP Alex Valverde took the loss. He threw two and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned), walking two.
The Hot Rods will have an off day on Tuesday and open up a three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps Wednesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:35pm Central.
