BRADENTON, Fla. — The Marauders managed just two hits through their first eight innings Saturday night in a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Tarpons at LECOM Park.

The Marauders (3-5, 32-41) went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left the would-be tying run stranded on base five times, including twice at third base.

Tampa (6-2, 33-41) took a first-inning lead on a Marcos Cabrera RBI-single. Marauders starter Yoelvis Reyes found himself in trouble multiple times, issuing five walks over three and two-thirds innings, but stranded three runners and limited the Tarpons to just one run.

Tarpons starter Chandler Champlain pitched five and one-third scoreless innings, striking out eight and allowing just two hits and two walks.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of Tampa through the sixth inning, as both teams squandered numerous run-scoring opportunities. But in the seventh, Roberto Chirinos blooped a doubled just inside the right field line and scored on an Alexander Vargas single off Jack Hartman. Vargas advanced to second on the play on a late and errant throw home by left fielder Jasiah Dixon, then advanced to third base on a flyout. Anthony Garcia then drew a walk from Hartman and proceeded to steal second base. Garcia’s steal drew a throw from catcher Wyatt Hendrie, enabling Vargas to race home from third, beating the throw home from second baseman Tsung-Che Cheng for a 3-0 Tarpons lead.

Hendrie, however, went on to catch runners attempting to steal second in each of the next two innings, throwing out Ben Cowles in the eighth inning and Vargas in the ninth. Both contributed to two scoreless innings by Marauders right-hander Carlos Lomeli, who helped keep the game within reach for Bradenton.

In the ninth, Rodolfo Nolasco drew a leadoff walk and Hendrie clubbed a two-run homer to left field off Gerrit van Zijll, bring the Marauders within one run, 3-2. But after Dixon following with a single, pinch-hitter Randy Romero struck out, and Dixon was caught by Tampa catcher Austin Wells on an attempted steal of second on the same pitch, ending the game.

Four Marauders pitchers in the game allowed a combined nine walks, matching the club’s season-high.

All nine Tampa batters reached base safely on a hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch, and Champlain combined with van Zijll and Harold Cortijo for 13 strikeouts in the game.

The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at LECOM Park. LHP Luis Peralta will start for the Marauders, while RHP Zach Messinger will start for Tampa.
