FORT MYERS, Fla. — Adrian Florencio spun six scoreless innings and passed the torch to a steady bullpen effort in a 1-0 Marauders win over the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium.

The win sets up an opportunity for the Marauders to win their sixth consecutive series with a victory in Sunday’s series finale.

Florencio (3-1) matched his career-high with six innings pitched, working into and out of trouble, including escaping a second-inning, bases-loaded threat by the Mighty Mussels (30-23).

The Marauders (35-18) produced the game’s only run in the top of the second inning, as Sammy Siani reached on a bunt single, took second base on a passed ball, and scored on a double to left-center by Yoyner Fajardo.

Mussels starter Louie Varland (3-2) took the hard-luck loss, striking out nine over six innings and retiring 10 of the final 11 Marauders batters he faced. Fort Myers relievers Denny Bentley and Carlos Suniaga combined for three scoreless innings behind Varland, and no Marauder reached base after a two-out single by Blake Sabol in the sixth.

Cameron Junker provided two perfect innings in relief for Bradenton behind Florencio, striking out four.

In the ninth, Enmanuel Mejia entered to pitch in a save situation. He retired Misael Urbina on a groundout, but allowed a one-out single to Charles Mack. Will Holland followed with a grounder to Fajardo at second base, and after waiting back for a favorable bounce, Fajardo threw Holland out at first base on a close play that drew an unsuccessful argument from Mussels manager Brian Meyer.

With Willie Joe Garry Jr. at the plate next, Nick Anderson, pinch-running for Mack, attempted to take third base on a pitch in the dirt by Mejia. But catcher Endy Rodriguez recovered the ball quickly and threw to third baseman Jase Bowen, who applied the tag onto Anderson to end the game.

Maikol Escotto extended his on-base streak to 14 games for the Marauders with a third-inning single. Hudson Head went 0-for-4 from the leadoff slot, ending his on-base streak at 10 games.

The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hammond Stadium. RHP Jared Jones will start for the Marauders against RHP Bobby Milacki.
