A career-best outing by starter Santiago Florez helped lead the way for the Bristol Pirates in a 10-0 series-finale victory against the Bluefield Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
The Pirates moved above .500 for the season after Tuesday's victory, as they own a winning record for the first time since July 12.
Second baseman Josh Bissonette kicked off what would become a six-run first inning for the Pirates as he doubled to right to drive in left fielder Jake Snider. Two more runs would score on a triple by third baseman Aaron Shackelford and a single by first baseman Matt Morrow, and then with two outs in the inning, center fielder Chase Murray, catcher Eli Wilson and right fielder Daniel Rivero would combine for three consecutive run-scoring hits to make it a 6-0 game. The Pirates would add a run in the second on a groundout by designated hitter Yoyner Fajardo, and a double by Shackelford in the fifth inning would increase Bristol's lead to eight runs. Snider would cap off the scoring for the Pirates with a two-run single in the sixth inning to drive in Wilson and Rivero.
Florez earned his second win of the year with a career-best performance, allowing four hits and no runs as he tied his career-high of six innings while also tying his career-high with seven strikeouts. Luis Arrieta earned his first career save after allowing just one hit and one walk over the final three innings of the game.
Snider extended his hitting streak to 12 games as he finished 3-for-5 with a stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Pirates at the plate. Bissonette and Shackelford both finished 2-for-5 with a double, with Bissonette recording one RBI and two runs scored while Shackelford also hit a triple and had two RBI and one run scored. Wilson tied for the game-high with two runs scored while going 1-for-2 at the plate with a double, a walk and an RBI.
The Pirates (30-29) remain 1/2 a game behind Johnson City in the Appalachian League West Division, and they now have a 1 1/2 game lead over the third-place Kingsport Mets. Luis Ortiz will start for the Pirates on Wednesday night when they return to Bristol for a two-game series with the Pulaski Yankees.
Over the final five home games of the regular season, the Pirates will have two special offers running for fans who come out to cheer on the team during its playoff push. For the remaining home schedule, all fans will get $2 off general admission prices, and fans 21 years and older can purchase alcohol at half price.
