Brooklyn, NY (May 22, 2022) – The Cyclones hit three home runs in Game One of today’s doubleheader to power past Hudson Valley by the score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. RHP Junior Santos (1-4) got the win after tossing 5.0 frames, allowing a pair of runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four.

The Cyclones took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Shervyen Newton connected on his first home run with Brooklyn – a solo blast over the left-field wall – to give Brooklyn an early advantage.

An inning later, it was Jose Peroza’s turn to hit his first home run of the season, a majestic fly ball off the left-field scoreboard that gave the Cyclones a 2-0 advantage. In the third, Jose Mena cranked a long fly ball that hit off the very top of the left-field wall to score a pair with a very well-struck single that made it 4-0.

In the fourth it was Jaylen Palmer’s turn to get in on the power party with his second home run of the season – also a solo shot – that made it 5-0 Cyclones after four innings of play.

But in the fifth, Cyclones starter Junior Santos ran into some trouble, allowing a two-RBI double to Pat DeMarco, trimming the Cyclones advantage to 5-2. An inning later, with Justin Courtney on the mound for Brooklyn the Renegades plated two more runs to cut the Brooklyn lead to a skinny run before Grant Hartwig, making his Cyclones debut recorded the last four outs of the game to collect the save and close out Brooklyn’s 5-4 win.

Game two of today’s double-dip will begin at approximately 3:20 PM.

BOX SCORE GAME TWO

Win – Clenney (2-2)

Loss – Castano (0-4)

Save – Parsons (2)

Home Runs – Newton (2), Palmer (3)

Time of Game – 1:24

Brooklyn, NY (May 22, 2022) – Brooklyn completed the doubleheader sweep of the Hudson Valley Renegades with a 3-1 win in Game Two of Sunday’s double-dip. RHP Nolan Clenney (2-2) tossed 5.0 dominant innings for the Cyclones allowing just one run on one hit while striking out a career-high eight. Offensively, Shervyen Newton and Jaylen Palmer each hit home runs in both ends of the doubleheader to lead the charge.

Clenney and Renegades starter Blas Castano traded zeroes through the first three frames but in the top of the fourth Hudson Valley broke the scoreless tie. Clenney struck out Trey Sweeney to start the frame – his sixth straight strikeout – but Everson Pereira followed with a triple into the right-centerfield gap to instantly start a rally. With the infield drawn-in Cooper Bowman with a chopper to shortstop that resulted in out number two, but also allowed Pereira to score the game’s first run.

The Renegades lead would be short-lived though, because in the bottom of the frame Shervyen Newton snuck a home run inside the right-field foul pole – a solo shot – to knot things up at 1-1. For Newton it was his second home run of the day, one from each side of the plate.

An inning later it was a home run from Jaylen Palmer – his second of the day as well – that gave Brooklyn a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. With a runner aboard and one out, Palmer drilled a two-run shot on a 1-1 offering to give Brooklyn a 3-1 lead.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Cyclones took the series from the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-2. It marks the first time the Cyclones have won a series with the Renegades since the 2019 season.

Brooklyn will head to Bowling Green on Tuesday to open a two-week road trip, playing at 7:35 ET.
