The Blue Jays could not complete a three-game sweep of the Yankees, falling Wednesday night at Sahlen Field to their AL East division rival by a score of 7-2.

Making just his third career big league start, 21-year old Deivi Garcia threw seven brilliant innings for New York, retiring 15 of the final 16 batters he faced to earn his first victory.

The only blemish on Garcia’s start was a two-run home run from Derek Fisher with two outs in the second inning. After Jonathan Villar reached on an infield single and was replaced by Caleb Joseph on a force out, Fisher turned on a 91-mph fastball from Garcia and drove it well beyond the wall in right-center field.

With the home run, Fisher’s first of the season, 12 different Blue Jays batters have left the yard at Sahlen Field. Toronto has hit a total of 30 home runs in 16 games in Buffalo.

But beyond that, the night belonged to Garcia. An Eastern League All-Star with Double-A Trenton last season, the righty made his big league debut just 10 days ago on August 30. On Wednesday, not only did he not issue a walk to any of the 26 Toronto batters he faced, he went to a three-ball count only twice all game.

With the game tied at 2 in the third, Garcia gave up a lead off single to Cavan Biggio but then put the clamps down on the hot-hitting Blue Jay offense. Following the hit, he struck out Randal Grichuk, Travis Shaw and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to end the inning.

Garcia then retired the side in order in three of the next four innings while the Yankees built a lead.

With the game still tied in the fifth inning, Luke Voit singled against the shift to score Tyler Wade from second and give New York the lead. Three batters later, Gleyber Torres, who opened the game’s scoring with a no-doubt home run in the second, pulled a double inside the bag at third to bring in two more runs and push the Yankee lead to 5-2.

New York scored two unearned run in the ninth and Aroldis Chapman finished off the win by striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

The Blue Jays still took the series, winning two of three games. After Thursday’s off day, Toronto will welcome the New York Mets to town for a three-game set at Sahlen Field.
