Almonte's Single Drops Bulls In 11, 2-1

Karns Pitches Into 8th; Figueroa HRs In Loss
May 11, 2014

Scranton, PA --- Zoilo Almonte singled in the winning run in the 11th inning to lead Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to a 2-1 decision over the Durham Bulls on Sunday afternoon.

Almonte batted with the bases loaded and one out against Doug Mathis (L, 2-2) and drilled a 2-0 pitch into right field for the game winner. The inning started with one out when Ramon Flores reached on a funky hop infield single on what looked to be a routine bouncer to shortstop. Scott Sizemore swatted the next pitch into right, then Mathis walked Dean Anna to fill the bases.

Nathan Karns worked into the eighth inning for the first time this season, permitting just three hits and one walk. Karns allowed a solo homer to Zelous Wheeler in the second inning, but was in charge most of the afternoon.

Eric Ruth was called up from High-A Tampa to make an emergency start for the Rail Riders (19-16). Chase Whitley was scratched by the Yankees, and Ruth, who was a middle reliever in the Florida State League, worked a career-high 92 pitches over five innings. Cole Figueroa homered against Ruth to leadoff the fifth to tie the game.

The Bulls' (21-17) best shot to win the game came in the seventh. Vince Belnome and Mikie Mahtook singled, then were bunted ahead by Figueroa. However, Curt Casali struck out looking and Hak-Ju Lee grounded to first.

The Bulls, now 1-6 on their current eight-game road trip, wrap up the series and the trip on Monday afternoon at 12:05 PM ET. Enny Romero (2-4, 5.02) starts against Brian Gordon (2-2, 4.23).
