Anderson Gives Bulls Walk-Off Win Over Clippers

First-place Durham Takes Series with Columbus
July 2, 2013

The first-place Durham Bulls lost a three-run lead, but won in extra innings, beating Columbus 6-5 in 10 innings at the DBAP on Tuesday. The win gave the Bulls a 3-1 series win over the visiting Clippers.

In the 10th, Leslie Anderson laced a single up the middle to bring home Tim Beckham with the walk-off run. Beckham pinch ran for Vince Belnome, who walked to start the inning. Shelley Duncan's single off the Blue Monster in left put Beckham on third base and set the stage for Anderson's heroics.

Kirby Yates (W, 4-1, 1.13) got the win with 1.1 innings of hitless relief. Columbus' Scott Barnes (L, 3-3, 7.81) didn't retire a batter and took the loss.

The Bulls jumped on top early with two first inning runs. Evan Frey hit a lead-off single for his first hit as a Bull, then scored on Cole Figueroa's double. Belnome would then single Figueroa home.

Durham increased its lead to 3-0 when Anderson led off the fourth with his eleventh homer of the season. Ezequiel Carrera's two-run single in the fifth shaved the Bulls' lead to one, but the Bulls got some breathing room an inning later, when Duncan hit a two-run homer-his ninth-over the Blue Monster in left.

Steve Geltz relieved starter Merrill Kelly to start the seventh and allowed the first three batters to reach on two walks and a hit. A single and two sacrifice flies tied the game.

The Bulls now head to Charlotte for one game, as the two Carolina rivals play Wednesday at Knights Stadium. RHP Matt Buschmann (2-0, 2.93) is scheduled to start for the Bulls opposite RHP Erik Johnson (1-0, 2.08). Durham returns home on July 4th for a two-game set against second-place Norfolk.
