ALLENTOWN, PA - The Durham Bulls salvaged a series split with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, earning an 8-5 win in the finale of the four-game set Tuesday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park.
The IronPigs () jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, plating a run in the first inning on Maikel Franco's RBI double. Durham countered in the top of the second inning though, when Vince Belnome delivered a two-run, two-out single to put the Bulls ahead 2-1.
Lehigh Valley tied the contest in the third inning on a bases-loaded walk, and then re-took the lead in the fifth on a solo homer from former Bull Russ Canzler to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
In the sixth inning the Bulls () continued the back-and-forth affair, scoring a pair as Justin Christian and Vince Belnome each drove in a run with base hits to reclaim the lead at 4-3. Then in the eighth with two outs and the bases loaded, Jeremy Moore singled to right field to drive in two, before another run came around on the play on a throwing error by Canzler to give Durham a comfortable 7-3 advantage.
Lehigh Valley wasn't done though, as Freddy Galvis cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to bring the game to within two runs. Ali Solis notched an RBI single in the top of the ninth though, putting Durham ahead 8-5 and closing the scoring.
Southpaw C.J. Riefenhauser (2-3) earned the win in relief with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, while right-hander Tyler Knigge (1-3) took the loss for the home side, allowing two runs in two frames.
The Bulls are off on Wednesday before returning home on Thursday for five games in four days against the Buffalo Bisons. Thursday features two seven-inning games as part of a doubleheader, with Durham LHP Enny Romero (4-11, 5.31) on the hill for game one opposite LHP Brad Mills (1-0, 3.86) for Buffalo. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., with game two following 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
