Guyer's Historic Night Caps Onslaught

Durham Explodes for 10 Runs in the First Inning
April 9, 2013

Durham, N.C. - The Durham offense was not waiting for the ninth inning to do their scoring on Tuesday night as they did in Monday's opener, as the Bulls scored 10 runs in the first inning en route to a 12-8 defeat of the Gwinnett Braves. Brandon Guyer led the offensive attack, blasting two home runs and collecting five RBI in the game's opening frame, while becoming the first Triple-A era Bull to homer twice in an inning and just the 21st player in International League history to do so.

Guyer currently has all three of the Bulls home runs in 2013. The outfielder finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate, with two home runs, five RBI, three runs scored and he was hit by a pitch.

Gwinnett starter Daniel Rodriguez (L, 0-1) lasted just 0.1 of an inning, as he allowed nine total runs on seven hits including two free passes as the lefty endured his first loss of 2013. The G-Braves bullpen of Wirfin Obispo, Ryan Buchter and Dusty Hughes combined to work 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball, surrendering just one total hit over that span.

Left-hander Alex Torres (W, 1-0) made the start for the Bulls and was extremely efficient, striking out the side in the opening frame of the game. The southpaw surrendered no runs on two hits, while he walked just one and struck out three en route to his first victory of the season.

Gwinnett chipped away at the 12-0 Durham lead, plating three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth to cut the deficit to four runs. RHP Steve Geltz entered the game in the sixth and proceeded to yield three runs, as Ernesto Mejia highlighted the Gwinnett fireworks as he blasted a towering three-run homer to straight-away centerfield in the sixth.

Will Inman and Josh Lueke combined to work the final 2.0 scoreless frames for Durham, concluding the slugfest in fine fashion.

Cole Figueroa went 3-for-4 and fell a home run short of the cycle. The diminutive third baseman is currently batting .467 on the season, which is the best Bulls average by over 70 points. Four Durham hitters, Wil Myers, Jason Bourgeois, Figueroa and Guyer, recorded a multiple hit game.

Wednesday's game is a 1:05 p.m. afternoon first pitch in the series finale between Durham and Gwinnett. Right-hander Chris Archer (1-0, 1.80) will take the mound for the Bulls against Gwinnett left-hander Sean Gilmartin (1-0, 1.80) as Durham seeks the sweep.
