Charlotte, NC --- Jake Hager drove in a career-best six runs to lead the Durham Bulls past the Charlotte Knights 9-2 on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
Hager connected for a three-run homer in the second inning, then tripled in a pair in the fifth. Hager delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Hager's previous high was five in a game in the Florida State League with the Charlotte Stone Crabs on July 3, 2013.
Ryan Yarbrough (W, 3-2) worked six innings, allowing just a two-run homer to Tyler Ldendorf in the fourth. Yarbrough was matched up against Charlotte (20-18) starter Carson Fulmer (L, 5-2), who was his high school teammate in Winter Haven, FL. Fulmer lasted 4 2/3 innings, permitting eight runs (seven earned) to absorb the loss.
With the victory, the Bulls avoided a three-game series sweep.
The Bulls (24-14) picked up a game on second place Gwinnett, returning home three games clear in the South ahead of a four-game set with the Braves that opens up Thursday night.
Yonny Chirinos (3-0, 2.45) starts the series opener for Durham at 7:05 PM ET.
