Burlington Bees (February 1, 2018) - The Los Angeles Angels and Burlington Bees announced today that Jack Howell will join the staff for his first year as Bees manager. Howell will be joined on the staff by pitching coach Jonathan Van Eaton, hitting coach Matt Spring, defensive coach Cole Garner, trainer Richard Gill and strength and conditioning coach Omar Porras.
Howell joins the staff for his first season as the Bees manager, he spent his previous year as the Minor League Field Coordinator for the Angels. The former Major Leaguer enjoyed an 11-year professional playing career which included stints with the Angels, Padres and Astros. Since his playing days, Howell has been an instrumental coach and instructor for the Diamondbacks, Marlins and Mariners before landing back with the Angels in 2016.
Matt Spring returns to the Bees after spending last season as the hitting coach for the Orem Owlz. Spring, a former catcher and first baseman who played 12 seasons in the minor leagues, he finished his playing career with a 5-year stint in the Boston Red Sox organization, topping out at Triple-A. In 2008, he won the second annual Erik Walker Community Champion Award, honoring a Rays Minor Leaguer who exemplifies teamwork, sportsmanship and community involvement.
Van Eaton will be a new addition to the Bees staff as the pitching coach. He spent his previous season with the Orem Owlz.
Garner joins the Bees in the newly created defensive coach position after a 10 year career in the Minor Leagues. He was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 26th round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft.
Gill returns to the Bees for his third season as the athletic trainer, he spent the 2015 season with the Arizona League Angles and is a native of Staunton, Virginia.
Porras joins the staff for his first season as the Bees strength and conditioning coach, he graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 2015.
