Bees Blank Bandits in Opener

Rodriguez allows one hit in five shutout innings

(Burlington, IA) - The Burlington Bees (67-71) held the Quad Cities River Bandits (60-77) off the scoreboard in 5-0 win on Saturday night at Community Field.

Bees' starting pitcher, Jose Rodriguez, tossed five scoreless innings on Saturday night. Rodriguez retired the last 11 batters he faced. The Bees gave Rodriguez run support in the fifth inning. Jared Walsh picked up his second hit of the night, grounding a single into left. After a ground out, Alexi Rivera singled to right field, scoring Walsh, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead.

Burlington started the top of the sixth inning with three straight hits. Troy Montgomery reached on an infield single and then moved to second on a Brennon Lund single. Matt Thaiss lined a single to left, scoring Montgomery to up the Bees' lead to 2-0. The Bees added another run thanks to a fielder's choice hit into by Jordan Zimmerman, making the score 3-0.

The Bees added two more runs in the eighth. Brennon Lund started the inning with a triple and then came home to score on a Quad Cities' error on a fielder's choice, extending the lead to 4-0. Connor Justus lofted a single to right, scoring Zimmerman, putting the score at 5-0.

Andrew Vinson, Connor Lillis-White, and Aaron Cox combined to toss four shutout innings, helping the Bees to a 5-0 win.

Jose Rodriguez (7-5) earned the win while Yoanys Quiala (2-12) was charged with the loss for the River Bandits. The Bees and the River Bandits continue the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
