Burlington, NC - The Bluefield Blue Jays (5-1) tossed a combined one-hitter in a 5-1 victory over the Burlington Royals (0-6) at Burlington Athletic Stadium on Sunday evening.
Austin Cox made his professional debut on the mound for the Royals and did not allow a run until the third inning, when Bluefield scratched one across with the help of two Burlington errors. In total, Cox went three innings allowing just the one unearned run and striking out five in his debut.
The Blue Jays scored three runs off reliever Marlin Willis in the fourth and one more in the seventh to take a 5-0 lead.
Three Bluefield pitchers combined to no-hit Burlington until Jose Marquez blasted his first home run of the season to cut it to 5-1 with two outs in the ninth. However, the next batter, Angel Medina, grounded out to end the game. With the win, Bluefield swept the three-game series.
The B-Royals will be back in action Monday night when they host the Danville Braves (2-4) in the first of a two-game set at Burlington Athletic Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
The Burlington Royals are the Appalachian League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
