Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation

November 12, 2013

There are few things in life that have more of an impact than helping change the fortune of a young child. The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation is committed to making a difference throughout the Lower Mainland by helping hundreds of bright young minds discover the game of baseball, where they will learn skills to help them and off the field.

Thanks to the efforts of owners Jake Kerr & Jeff Mooney, along with C's president Andy Dunn, the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation has helped more than 900 local youth play organized baseball in our Vancouver Canadians Baseball League. The league sees children from local chapters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC play throughout the summer at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.

About the Vancouver Canadians Baseball League:

Formed in 2012, the Vancouver Canadians Baseball League (VCBL) welcomes children between the ages of 6-11 out to historic Nat Bailey Stadium to learn the game of baseball; the goal is simple - while developing skills that will help them on the diamond, these children are also learning skills for the the classroom and at home as well. Focusing on teamwork, sportsmanship and development, children involved with wealththe VCBL receive the support they need from a number of volunteers and sponsors all hoping to share the experience of a lifetime by playing organized baseball.

With thanks to Scotiabank, The Sports Exchange, The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast B.C., and our generous donors, we are able to help these children by providing the following:

  • transportation to and from local Boys & Girls Club chapters
  • a Canadians Equipment Pack that includes a jersey, hat, certified batting helmet, new glove and sports bag
  • a fresh meal at Scotiabank Field each game catered by Aramark Food Services
  • the experience of learning about baseball from a group of volunteers solely committed to ensuring each child can better themselves through organized sport

It is with your support that we are able to help create memories that will last a lifetime. You can donate to the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation by offering your time as a volunteer, or by submitting a monetary donation that will go directly toward the VCBL. About our Scholarship to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Baseball Program:

When it comes to developing the future of our game from the collegiate ranks, no one has been more successful than Head Coach Terry McKaig and the UBC Thunderbirds Baseball Program. More than 25 student athletes have gone through this program and onto professional baseball careers either here in North America or abroad. Names like Jeff Francis, Darren Watts and Brooks McNiven have all bettered themselves as students and as athletes thanks to the education they received at the University of British Columbia.

The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation acknowledges these efforts on a yearly basis by giving the Thunderbirds Baseball Program a $20,000 donation to be used toward helping a local student athlete further their education while playing baseball at UBC. We see the caliber of student that develops within the UBC Thunderbirds Baseball Program and are proud to support what we consider the best university baseball program in Canada.

About our relationship with Challenger Baseball:

The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation is honoured to be associated with Challenger Baseball, a program committed to children who have physical, developmental or intellectual disabilities. Through Challenger Baseball, bright, young children are provided with an opportunity to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation at a level structured to their abilities.

Challenger Baseball allows these children and their families the chance to be a part of a team while building confidence, pride and self-esteem. Players from local baseball leagues who wish to support Challenger Baseball volunteer their time and act as a 'buddy' to help assist the 'Challengers' as they run the bases, catch, throw and feel the excitement of playing organized baseball.

Thanks to Ian McLean, National Challenger Baseball Coordinator, the Vancouver Canadians have chosen to donate $20,000 each year since 2011 to this great community initiative and believe in this program as the blueprint for helping those within our community who need it most.
