Captains Avoid Sweep With 8-5 Win

(Eastlake, OH)- Lake County scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and beat the Dragons by a final of 8-5. With the bases loaded, Leonardo Castillo singled to left field and one run scored. Nick Hamilton followed with a singled to center field, and the score was 6-4. The Captains won the season series against Dayton nine games to seven.

Lake County took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. LeVon Washington lined a triple to right field and scored on a ground out from Eric Haase. It was 1-0 Lake County headed to the second inning.

In the third inning, the Captains added three runs. Nick Hamilton led off with a walk and moved to third on a double by Washington. Dorssys Paulino singled home Hamilton and the score was 2-0. Eric Haase reached on an error and Washington scored to make the score 3-0. The inning was capped when Richard Stock singled home Dorssys Paulino and the score was 4-0.

In the top of the fifth inning, Dayton got on the scoreboard. Zach Vincej tripled and scored on a single from Sammy Diaz and the score was 4-1 Captains. The Dragons tied the ballgame on the sixth inning. With two runners on and nobody out, Beau Amaral tripled home both runs and the score was 4-3. Amaral scored on a sacrifice fly by Tanner Rahier. The ballgame was tied at 4-4.

Dayton scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to cut into the lead. With two outs, Brent Peterson doubled. Peterson raced home to score on a Jon Mathews single and the score was 6-5. Lake County tacked on a couple of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Richard Stock singled and moved to second base on wild pitch. Cody Ferrell then walked. Zack MacPhee sacrificed both runners to scoring position. Leonardo Castillo then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Stock. The throw into the infield was wild and Ferrell also came into score. The final was 8-5.

RHP D.J. Brown (2-4) started the game for Lake County and did not get a decision. Brown pitched five innings and allowed just one earned run on five hits and two walks. Brown struck out four. Anderson Polanco (1-1) earned the win. Polanco allowed three earned runs, on two hits and he walked one. Cody Penny twirled two innings and allowed one earned run, on four hits. Grant Sides pitched the ninth inning and earned his sixth save of the season.

RHP Sal Romano (7-10) took the ball for Dayton and took the loss. Romano pitched five and one third innings and allowed six hits, six runs, five of the runs were earned. Romano walked two and struck out two. The Dayton bullpen pitched two and two thirds innings and allowed two earned runs, one walk and one strikeout.

The Captains will travel to Comstock Park, MI on Saturday to take on the West Michigan Whitecaps for game one of a four game series. Lake County will start RHP Jake Sisco (4-10, 4.67) and WM will counter with RHP Edgar De La Rosa (7-6, 5.87). First Pitch is at 7:00 PM from Fifth Third Ballpark.
