Captains Best Bandits 7-3

(Eastlake, OH) - Lake County scored twice in the fifth inning to extend their lead, and eventually won the ballgame by a final of 7-3 over Quad Cities. In the fifth, Logan Vick and Joe Sever walked to begin the inning. Erik Gonzalez hit a ground rule double to center field and Vick scored. At the time, the score was 5-2. It became 6-2 when Jeremy Lucas hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Sever scored. The Captains (15-14) have won the first two in the three game series with the River Bandits (15-13).

Quad Cities scored the first run of the ballgame. Teoscar Hernandez led off the game by reaching base on an error. He was then sacrificed to second base. Carlos Correa then singled him to third base. Correa tried to steal second base, but was thrown out by Eric Haase. Hernandez, who was at third base, came home to score on the throw and the score was 1-0 River Bandits.

Lake County scored four times to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jeremy Lucas hit a one out double to left field to start the rally. With two outs, Jorge Martinez doubled home Lucas to tie the ballgame. Yhoxian Medina singled home Martinez to give the Captains the 2-1 lead. With two outs and Medina at second base, Todd Hankins hooked his third homerun of the season around the left field foul pole and the score was 4-1 Lake County.

Quad Cities scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to close the gap. Austin Elkins singled to right field to begin the inning, with one out Bobby Borchering doubled him to third base. Jesse Wierzbicki grounded out to third base and a run scored and the score was 6-2. The River Bandits continued the rally in the seventh inning. Dan Gulbransen singled and moved to third base on a double by Luis Alvarez. Gulbransen scored on a ground out to third base. The score was 6-3 headed to the bottom of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Logan Vick led off with a double to left field. Joe Sever singled to center field and Vick scored. Sever was thrown out trying to take second base on the throw but was credited with the RBI. Lake County led 7-3. 

RHP Luis Morel (2-1) started the game for Lake County and did not get a decision. Morel pitched four innings and allowed just one hit and one unearned run. Morel walked one and struck out four. Felix Sterling (3-4) pitched two innings and earned the win. Felix allowed one earned run on one hit, and he struck out two. Jimmy Stokes pitched ne inning and allowed one earned run on three hits. Stokes walked one. Benny Suarez pitched the final two innings, which were scoreless. He walked two and struck out one.

Quad Cities sent LHP Joe Bircher (1-1) to the mound to start the game. Bircher took the loss. He pitched four innings plus. He allowed nine hits, six earned runs, he had three walks and four strikeouts. The Quad Cities bullpen pitched four innings, and allowed four hits, and one earned run. The Bandits bullpen walked two and struck out three.

The Quad Cities River Bandits remain in Eastlake, Ohio on Monday Morning. In the finale of a three game series, the Captains will start RHP Dylan Baker (6-5, 3.53) and Quad Cities will counter with LHP Colton Cain (4-5, 4.14). First Pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM from Classic Park.
