Captains Down West Michigan 5-4

(South Bend, IN)- Adam Plutko earned his first professional win after the Captains defeated West Michigan by a final of 5-4. Plutko, who is the 18th best prospect in the Indians organization according to Baseball America, pitched five innings, and allowed six hits, three walks and three earned runs. Plutko struck out four. The Captains have won two straight games.

Lake County took (7-17) the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Anthony Santander singled home Dorssys Paulino. The Captains had the early lead.

The Captains added on in the bottom of the third inning. Claudio Bautista singled to center field to get the inning started. Nellie Rodriguez blasted his fourth homerun of the season and the score was 3-0. Anthony Santander followed suit with a homerun. The back-to-back homers made the score 4-0 after three innings.

West Michigan (12-12) scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to creep back into the game. With one out the Whitecaps had four straight base runners including a two run double from Willy Adames. The score after four innings was 4-3.

Lake County scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Captains a two run cushion. Anthony Santander, who had three hits, laced a double to left center field. Santander scored on a triple from Paul Hendrix and the score was 5-3. West Michigan scored an unearned run in the ninth inning to make the score 5-4. That was the final.

Kenny Mathews pitched three scoreless innings in relief and allowed just one hit and had one strikeout. Trevor Frank closed the door in the ninth for his third save of the season.

RHP Chad Green (1-2) started for West Michigan and took the loss. Green pitched five innings and allowed eight hits, five earned runs, two walks and eight strikeouts. Matt Davenport pitched three innings of scoreless baseball and allowed one hit and two strikeouts.

The Captains will remain at home in Eastlake, Ohio on Tuesday to take on the West Michigan Whitecaps in game two of a four game series. The Captains will start RHP Mitch Brown (0-3, 4.15) and West Michigan will counter with RHP Jonathon Crawford (0-1, 4.08). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM from Classic Park.
