Captains Soar Past Silver Hawks 7-5

(South Bend, IN) - Joe Sever had four RBI's and the Captains (16-15) defeated South Bend (18-14) by a final of 7-5 on Wednesday Night. Sever had three hits, with the four RBI's. Logan Vick knocked in two and Yhoxian Medina had a RBI single. The Captains won their first game in South Bend this season, improving to 1-4 at Coveleski Stadium.

In the first, Lake County opened the scoring. With two outs, Logan Vick singled. Joe Sever followed with a double to the right-center field gap and Vick scored. Lake County was up 1-0. South Bend tied the game in their half of the frame. The Hawks got had Fidel Pena at third base and Rudy Flores was at the plate. Luis Dejesus Balked and Pena came home to tie the ballgame at 1-1.

In the second inning, the Captains sent nine men to the plate and scored four times to take command of the game. Eric Haase tripled to lead off the inning, and was hit home by Yhoxian Medina to give the Captains the 2-1 lead. Logan Vick singled home two more and the Captains led 4-1. Joe Sever got his second of three hits, and the RBI single gave the Captains a 5-1 lead.

Alex Glenn tripled to lead off the second inning. Glen scored on a ground out by Michael Perez the lead was trimmed to 5-2.

In the fourth, with runners on second and third base, Joe Sever singled home both runs to give the Captains a 7-2 lead. Sever had four RBI's for the game. In the bottom of the fourth, South Bend answered back. Rudy Flores and Alex Glenn both scored. Flores scored on a Andrew Velazquez single and Glenn came home on a double by Fidel Pena. The Score was 7-4.

The Hawks scored once more. In the fifth, Socrates Brito singled and scored on a Brandon Drury's 37th double of the season. Drury leads the MWL in doubles and now has 69 RBI's on the season. The score was 7-5 and that was the final.

RHP Luis Dejesus (4-10) started the game for Lake County and earned the win. Dejesus pitched five innings and allowed five runs, but only four were earned. Luis yeildedeight hits and two walks. Ejesus fanned two. LHP Kyle Crockett made his Captains debut by pitching one scoreless inning. He walked one and struck out one. Cody Penny pitched two scoreless innings and recorded two strikeouts and Grant Sides earned his second save of the season by twirling a scoreless ninth inning. The bullpen did not allow a hit.

South Bend sent RHP Kyle Winkler (2-3) to the mound to start the game. Winkler took the loss. The righty only lasted four innings and allowed nine hits. Winkler yielded all seven runs although only six were earned. Winkler walked two and struck out five. The bullpen for the Silver Hawks pitched five innings in relief and allowed two hits, two walks and struck out six. The pen did not allow a run to score.

The Captains will be back in action on Thursday Night in South Bend, IN. The Captains will start RHP Jake Sisco (4-7, 3.74) and South Bend will counter with RHP Brad Allen (4-6, 5.47).
